What I’m Wearing to the Dead’s 60th in Golden Gate Park (Yes, You’ll Need Layers)

Deadheads heading to San Francisco this August for the Grateful Dead’s 60th Anniversary celebration: don’t let the calendar fool you. While it might be summer elsewhere, SF brings the fog, wind, and chill—especially once the sun goes down.

The show starts in the afternoon and rolls deep into the night, and with no lockers available, you’ve gotta wear or carry everything you need.

So this year, I’m keeping it layered, comfy, and full of Deadhead flavor. This post covers what I’m wearing (and loving), from tanks and velvet bells to everyones beloved furry hat. Picks are linked below — and stay tuned for next week’s full packing checklist as we close in on the big weekend.

Day-to-Night Festival Vibes

I’ll be dressing for three long, beautiful days of music, dancing, and after-parties — with no outfit changes, just peel-off layers.

Each day starts warm-ish and ends cold. So I’m building all my outfits around these rules:

  • Start with a cute base layer (tank + pants)
  • Add midweight layers (cardigan, hoodie)
  • Top it off with something fog-proof (vest, packable puffer coat, gloves, hat)
  • Wear shoes you can walk and dance in for 10 hours straight
  • Make sure everything fits in your bag or on your body

All items are easy to wear, layer, stuff in a bag, or dance like crazy in. It’s all about warmth + comfort + Deadhead flair.

Best of all, nothing here too expensive. It it gets trashed, you’re not out much and these items can be easily replaced.

2023 Flashback — Same Look, Same City, Same Vibe

We wore this combo to Dead & Co’s final tour stop in San Francisco in July 2023 and it was perfect — we stayed warm, dry and comfortable:

We’ll be rocking these looks again this year (come find us!)

What I’m Bringing (Hint: You’ll Carry Everything)

There are no lockers, so what you wear and pack needs to stay with you all day. I keep it light but smart.

Rather than list it all again, check out my full Festival Essentials post for what I always bring — including:

  • Pop-up seat for resting during set breaks
  • Empty water bottle
  • Sunglasses, wipes, and snacks (on the DL)
  • Phone charger, tissues, earplugs, and more

(Pro tip: Bookmark the Official Concert Info Page for Golden Gate Park rules, allowed items, and last-minute updates.)

Next week’s post will be my full packing checklist, so don’t stress if you’re still figuring out what to bring, I got you.
