60 Years of the Grateful Dead: Coming Home to San Francisco

Reflections from a lifelong Deadhead on the road to Golden Gate Park

In 1982, I walked into my first Grateful Dead show—and unknowingly stepped into a world that would shape the rhythm of my life. I was hooked immediately: the energy, the freedom, the feeling that anything was possible once the music started. Before Jerry passed, I saw the band over a dozen times. Since 2016, I’ve danced through more than 50 Dead & Company shows, each one a thread in the tapestry of this long, strange trip.

This August, the journey comes full circle.

Dead & Company: A Historic Run at Golden Gate Park

On August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2025, Dead & Company will celebrate the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary with a three-night stand in Golden Gate Park—the very heart of where it all began.

Each night brings a different musical guest:

  • August 1st: Billy Strings
  • August 2nd: Sturgill Simpson (as Johnny Blue Skies)
  • August 3rd: Trey Anastasio Band

And this isn’t just another summer tour. It’s a milestone. A full-circle moment. An honoring of roots, community, and legacy.

The vibe will extend beyond the stage. Mickey Hart’s Art at the Edge of Magic opens July 24 at the Haight Street Art Center, offering a multi-sensory journey through the visual dimensions of the Dead’s creativity. (Highly recommend making time for this if you’re in town early.)

Bonus Shows: Grahame Lesh & Melvin Seals

The party doesn’t stop at the Polo Fields. All weekend long, the celebration spills beyond Golden Gate Park into one of San Francisco’s most iconic intimate venues—the historic Great American Music Hall, (GAMH). Where Melvin Seals & JGB will play two nights.

GAMH has been a Deadhead hotspot for decades, and Melvin Seals was a key figure in Jerry Garcia’s band for 18 years. The venue’s intimate vibe means you’ll be mere feet from the Hammond B‑3 wizardry, making it one of the most authentic “after-party” experiences during the 60th-anniversary weekend.

Grahame Lesh (Phil’s son) brings his The Heart of Town, a 3-night concert series to Pier 48 (next to Oracle Park) with rotating all‑star guests (45 artists over three nights), including Melvin Seals, John Medeski, Jackie Greene, Karl Denson, and more—adding fresh energy and family vibes to the celebration.

This vibrant three-night series at Pier 48 isn’t just a show—it’s part of the Bay Area’s cultural fabric, uniting local landmarks, fan traditions, and the next generation of Dead-inspired music.

Presented by the San Francisco Giants and Relix Media Group and produced by Terrapin Station Entertainment & Dayglo Presents. A portion of ticket proceeds benefits the Rex Foundation —a nonprofit started by the Grateful Dead to support arts, education, and community

These satellite shows are the soul of the scene—smaller venues, close-knit energy, and the kind of setlists that go deep.

Why This One Feels Different

The music has always evolved—but the soul of the Dead has remained untouched. These shows aren’t just concerts—they’re a gathering of generations. Whether you caught your first show in the ’60s or your first stream in 2020, this is our collective campfire.

Being in San Francisco, on Jerry’s birthday weekend, surrounded by that same spirit we’ve carried for 60 years… it’s hard to put into words. But I know the minute the first notes ring out through the eucalyptus, I’ll feel it.

Deadhead Reading Essentials

In honor of the big event, I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite reads for fellow Deadheads who want to reflect, reconnect, or just nerd out on all things Grateful Dead. These are perfect pre-show rituals or post-show wind-downs.

Until then, I’d love to hear:
