☀️Closer to the Sun Festival Recap

Music, Family, Healing — and Honoring a Legend

Before diving into the recap, I want to start with a sincere thank you.

So many of you connected with me during Closer to tell me how helpful the prep posts were — what to pack, what to expect, how to think about the long days, late nights, and everything in between. Knowing those posts helped make your experience smoother or less stressful means more to me than you know. That’s exactly why I write them.

We also said we’d come back after the festival and talk honestly about what worked, what didn’t, and what we’d do differently next time. I fully intended to structure this recap around logistics, lessons learned, and highlights.

But as music people know — sometimes the music, and the moment, takes over.

And this year, something happened that reshaped the entire experience for me.

Arriving Early, Letting the Week Unfold

We arrived at the Hard Rock on Friday, January 9th, the day before the festival officially began. We learned a long time ago not to travel on the same day a festival starts — it’s exhausting and takes away from the joy. Arriving early gives you time to settle in, adjust to the time zone, and ease into the rhythm of what’s coming.

That extra day turned out to be a gift.

When the Music Paused — and Then Carried Us

Saturday, January 10th, the festival’s opening day, began like any other Closer kick off — excitement in the air, everyone gathering for the annual opening toast. But just minutes before it began, the news started circulating that Bob Weir had passed.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a lifelong Deadhead. This one hit deeply.

Having seen Bobby just months earlier at GD60, and sensing something felt off at the time, none of us imagined those shows would be his last. Like so many others, I assumed he’d eventually step back a bit, make room for others, and keep the spirit moving forward. None of us expected this.

While my plan heading into Mexico was to write a Closer recap, there was no way to do that without pausing to honor Bobby. His presence — his influence — has woven through this entire genre of music and this festival, in ways both obvious and subtle.

As I’ve written before, there’s a deep connection between Deadheads and Stoopidheads, and Bobby’s passing was felt across the entire community. The timing was surreal, raw, and collective.

Every year, Slightly Stoopid opens Closer to the Sun with a toast. This year, Miles Doughty used that moment to honor the man who helped shape so much of the foundation beneath their music. It may have been one of the very first tributes — delivered just minutes after the news broke. It was emotional. Honest. Exactly what the moment called for.

Music is therapy. Bobby and Jerry always believed that. The show must go on.
And it did — carried forward by love, remembrance, and a shared understanding that the music never truly stops.

Saturday: Setting the Vibe

After the toast, the festival officially kicked off with an epic set by The Elovaters, instantly setting the tone for the days ahead. Rebelution followed on the main stage, and Pepper and Z-Trip closed out the night on the Stairway to Heaven stage well into the early hours.

A much needed release to offset my saddness — the kind only live music can give.

Sunday: Poolside Sets & Under the Sea Weed

Sunday brought afternoon poolside sets from Rome and Hirie followed by a powerful Slightly Stoopid set at the Lagoon Beach Stage.

Following Stoopids set, we headed to the High Fiver Party, hosted by Dan Kelly of Fortunate Youth — our fifth year attending. Five years in, Julian and I received our robes, one of those small traditions that somehow comes to represent so much more than the item itself.

That night marked the first themed event: Under the Sea Weed. The creativity and participation never disappoint at Closer, and this year was no exception. People fully committed, laughed hard, and leaned into the fun.

The Movement opened the main stage, followed by Common Kings.

DENM and Little Stranger closed the night (or I should say wee hours) with back-to-back performances on the Stairway to Heaven stage — both absolutely crushing it.

Monday: Glow Night, Rain & Rolling With It

Monday began with beach sets from Rome and an incredible unplugged Stephen Marley set, followed by back-to-back main stage performances from Pepper and Slightly Stoopid.

That night’s theme was Glow, and once again, the crowd delivered — even when the weather didn’t. The rain came down hard, fast, and relentlessly. Full-on tropical downpour. People were soaked, laughing, dancing anyway, still glowing despite.

This is where preparation really mattered. Rain gear mattered. Layers mattered. While past Closers leaned colder at night, this year was warmer overall — and unpredictable. Those who were prepared barely missed a beat. The rest adapted quickly.

Performances only stop when there is lightning — and the music carried on, downpour and all.

Little Stranger and Z-Trip closed the night with an incredible collaborative set on the Stairway to Heaven stage. Pure magic.

Tuesday: Final Day, Full Heart

Tuesday didn’t slow down for a second.

Dan Kelly kicked things off with a poolside set before heading to the rail for DENM and The Elovaters, back-to-back on the lagoon beach stage. It was hot — the kind of heat where you just commit and go with it.

DENM was doing soundcheck when we arrived, so we tagged him with one of our custom designed Lucky Fucker Family lens cloths, which he immediately used on his sunglasses.

Btw fam – did you get one? Drop a comment below. Stay tuned as well, as coming soon, we’ll be officially launching our line of custom branded Lucky Fucker Family swag and apparel. So, you too can be part of the family and join in on the fun.

DENM delivered a beautiful acoustic set, featuring several songs from his new album “Hot n Glassy” (best yet, in my opinion). Here’s a link if you want to check it out. #affiliate

The Elovaters followed and were tagged with Lucky Fucker Family cloths as well — guys we’ve crossed paths with many times over the years. Jackson cleaned his glasses, then jokingly pretended to blow his nose with the cloth. Julian (Green Bear) fired back that it could double as an emergency ass wipe. Laughter all around. These guys are the real deal — kind, hardworking, and deeply appreciative. Their success is well earned.

We missed Slightly Stoopid’s acoustic set inside Heaven Lobby (festival trade-offs happen). That evening, Hirie and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley with Stephen Marley performed to close out the festivals main stage performances.

Collie Buddz performed on the Stairway to Heaven stage, followed by The Movement, who closed out the festival in truly epic fashion.

Special shout out to Collie Buddz & Common Kings who stepped in last minute after Dirty Heads had to withdraw due to a family medical emergency. Sending love to Duddy B and his family, and major respect to the artists who showed up in support. That’s community.

The Circle of It All

Despite the heavy moments — Bobby’s passing, unexpected changes — this festival still hit every right note.

The music.
The family.
The love.

This is what it’s all about.

You reconnect with people you haven’t seen in months, perhaps years. You make new friends without trying. You hear people say they might not come back next year because of cost or logistics — and then you get there, feel it all again, and wonder why you ever questioned it.

Huge thanks to Cloud 9, Hard Rock Riviera Maya, Slightly Stoopid and every artist who made this year unforgettable.

Until next year fam.

What’s Next

As festival season continues, I’ll still be writing prep posts and linking out to our Festival Essentials and Glow Picks pages for upcoming events:

But next week, we pivot.

We’ve spent weeks immersed in music — and that inspiration is coming home with us. In the next post, I’m transitioning into our first HOME feature:

The Music Lovers Living Room (SoCal inspired of course) — how this lifestyle shows up in the spaces we live in every day.

Different setting.
Same soul.
