Destination Festival Packing List: What to Actually Bring to a Beach Music Festival

Sun, salt air, and three days of music. Here’s what comes with me.

I’m heading to Viva El Gonzo in San José del Cabo this May — three nights of Goose, beach club access daily, steps from the Sea of Cortez. It’s the kind of trip where the festival is almost secondary to the location. Almost.

I’ve done enough of these to know that a destination festival packing list is different from a standard festival kit. This one is built specifically for beach-heavy trips where you’re flying somewhere beautiful and spending three days alternating between sand and stage with the sun going full send on you the whole time.

It punishes the unprepared — not dramatically, but in a slow, squinting, sunburned, dead-phone, sore-legs-on-day-three kind of way.

This is what I’m bringing. Not everything — the right things. And if you want the full festival kit beyond this list, the shop page has everything I’ve curated for festival season.

Beach Festival Sunscreen: Why Most People Bring the Wrong Kind

Not whether to bring it. Which one.

Most beach festival destinations — Cabo included — have reef-safe requirements. Your standard drugstore sunscreen with oxybenzone? Banned. You need mineral, zinc-based SPF, and you need to reapply it like it’s your job because between the water, the sweat, and the sun angle in May, it’s gone faster than you think.

EltaMD UV Clear is the one I use. SPF 46, zinc oxide base, oil-free, won’t clog your pores or leave a white cast in the heat. It works on sensitive skin and it’s the rare sunscreen that actually holds up across a full festival day.

What to Wear to a Beach Festival: Start With the Hat

Wide brim. Not a baseball cap.

A wide-brim packable hat covers your face, ears, and the back of your neck — the three places that turn a great festival into a miserable recovery week. It travels flat or rolled, which matters when you’re packing for a flight.

Shade when you need it, easy to carry when you don’t

I’ve been wearing this Coolibar Perla — lightweight, breathable, and it actually finishes a look without overthinking it. The kind of hat you’re glad you brought by hour two.

It’s also genuinely the strongest styling move at a beach festival. Lean into it.

Festival Cooling Gear: The Misting Fan You’ll Wish You Had Sooner

I resisted this for years. I was wrong.

A personal USB misting fan during an afternoon outdoor set in 90° heat is not optional — it’s the difference between loving every minute and just surviving until the sun goes down. The crowd will notice. People will ask where you got it. Bring two if you’re traveling with someone.

Hydration for a Destination Festival: Electrolytes, Not Just Water

Water alone doesn’t cut it when you’re sweating in direct sun for six hours. The salt and mineral loss is real and it hits you around hour four if you’re not replacing it.

I use electrolyte packets — one in my bottle every morning before I leave the hotel. It’s the single easiest wellness upgrade for a festival weekend and most people skip it entirely.

Festival Wellness Essentials: The Two Things That Change Day Three

Two items that most packing lists leave off entirely.

Magnesium spray. Spray it on your legs and feet before bed each night. It reduces muscle soreness and genuinely improves sleep quality in a hotel room that still has festival energy running through it. I noticed the difference the first time I used it and haven’t traveled without it since.

Peppermint essential oil roll-on. Temples when a headache starts, inner wrists for a cooling effect in heat. TSA-legal, fits in a fanny pack, works fast. I also travel with lavender for the hotel wind-down and a protective blend for travel days. Roll-ons only — no spill risk, no TSA hassle.

What to Pack for a Destination Festival: The Bag Setup

Festival security has moved to clear bag requirements at most major events. This BS-VOG clear purse is stadium-approved, styled with a chain strap, and actually looks like something you chose on purpose — not just a security requirement. Light, hands-free, fits your phone, sunscreen stick, cards, and lip balm.

This is also just the right bag for a beach festival day. Light, secure, hands-free.

Festival Travel Essentials for the Flight and Hotel

Two things. That’s it.

The things that make the actual travel part work without friction.

Mini massage gun. Legs, shoulders, feet. Hotel room recovery between days. Pocket-sized, USB-chargeable. The thing that makes day three feel like day one.

I’ve done these trips enough times to know the difference between showing up prepared and spending day two recovering. This list is what prepared looks like.

If you want the full kit — outfits, accessories, and everything else I bring to festival season — it’s all on the shop page. You’ve got the ticket. Show up ready.
