🏖️Closer to the Sun Festival Prep: A First-Timer’s Guide to Paradise
(Plus -Theme Night Prep Before You Travel)
If this is your first time heading to Closer to the Sun, welcome — you’re about to experience something very different from a traditional music festival.
Closer to the Sun is a destination festival-meets-vacation, set on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, where live music unfolds across an all-inclusive resort. There are no dusty fields, no clear bag rules, no hydration packs, and no merchandise to carry.
💡Tip: For additional information, including information on traveling to MX and logistics, please visit the official CTTS website.
There is also a great CTTS 2026 Facebook Group I recommend joining, which can also answer a lot of your questions.
This will be our fifth year attending, and one of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is this:
👉 If you want to enjoy the event and theme nights without scrambling, you need to prepare in advance.
This Closer to the Sun festival prep guide is designed to help first-timers (and returning guests) know what to expect and prepare early — especially for theme nights.
What Is Closer to the Sun?
Now in its 11th year, Closer to the Sun, hosted by San Diego’s very own – Slightly Stoopid, blends a reggae-forward lineup with a multi-day stay in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Instead of packing everything into one weekend, the festival unfolds gradually, over 4 days, letting you enjoy both the music and the destination.
You don’t just attend shows — you live inside the festival.
Mornings start by the pool or beach. Afternoons bring beach and poolside sets. Nights turn into immersive courtyard shows, followed by intimate late-night performances. And when the music ends, in the wee hours, your room is only steps or a bus ride away.
💡Insider Tip: Bring your water/pool floaties for the beach and pool performances. See our Cosmic Glow page for picks.
Where the Festival Takes Place
Closer to the Sun has expanded beyond just the host resort (Hard Rock) and now includes multiple all-inclusive resorts. More resorts = more people attending.
The primary host property, and where all the music takes place, is the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, with additional accommodations at:
- Barceló Maya Beach
- UNICO Riviera Maya
💡Tip: Those staying at these other resorts, you will be transported by bus in and out of the Hard Rock daily. Busses run regularly if you don’t want to stay for all the shows. Give yourself plenty of time to get back and forth. Packing a bag for the day at Hard Rock is highly recommended so you don’t miss any of the music.
Once you arrive, everything — rooms, food, drinks, pools, and beaches — is handled on-site.
BIG shout out to the folks at Cloud 9 Adventures who organize this incredible event for us every year.
💡Insider Tip: Cash is King in MX! Bring lot’s of $1 and $5 for tipping.
Weather Forecast
December in Riviera Maya is close to perfect:
- Daytime highs in the mid-70s to low-80s°F
- Comfortable, breezy evenings
- Lower humidity than summer
- Occasional brief rain showers
Translation: pack light, breathable, and fun. Bring layers as it can get cool there in the evenings.

🎭 Theme Nights: Prepare Now, Dates Coming Soon
Theme nights are a core part of the Closer to the Sun experience, and participation is strongly encouraged — but never mandatory.
While the official day-by-day schedule has not yet been released, the themes themselves have been confirmed, which means now is the time to prepare. Waiting until the week of travel often means limited options or missed opportunities.
We created Cosmic Glow so you can shop theme-night essentials now — before travel logistics and last-minute stress kick in.
🌊 Under the Sea-Weed
This theme leans into tropical island energy and nautical nonsense. Think:
- Grass skirts & floral shirts
- Pirates, sailors, mermaids, jellyfish
- Sea creatures, coral colors, ocean textures
Whether you go full costume or subtle coastal vibes, this night is playful and creative.
✨ Light It Up (Glow Night)
A Closer to the Sun tradition — and one of the most visually electric nights of the week.
Think:
- Neon colors
- LED accessories
- Glow-in-the-dark pieces
- Anything that lights up after dark
