🏖️Closer to the Sun 2026 Packing List: Tips on Packing What You’ll Actually Use + Theme Nights & Balcony Glow

Closer to the Sun isn’t a festival where you overpack — it’s one where you pack intentionally.

Most guests staying on-site won’t need much during the day, and once you arrive, you’ll quickly fall into a rhythm of beach time, pool hangs, and late-night shows. This packing list focuses on the things you’ll actually use all weekend, plus a few timely reminders now that the official 2026 schedule and theme nights have dropped.

These are the items almost everyone needs, regardless of which resort you’re staying at.

1. Insulated Cup (or Two)

You’ll use this all day — pool, beach, shows, and late nights. Keeps drinks cold, cuts down on plastic, and the bars are happy to fill them.

2. Sun Protection That Actually Works

Closer to the Sun = hours outdoors.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • After-sun care (trust us)

Your skin will thank you by Day 3.

3. Hat You’ll Wear All Day

Stylish and functional. Shade during daytime sets, easy throw-on for pool breaks, and helpful when you’re running on minimal sleep.

4. Hand Fan (Essential, Not Optional)

Crowds + tropical weather = airflow matters. Fans are clutch during packed sets and late-night dancing.

6. Rain Layer (Yes, Really)

The forecast is calling for possible rain during the festival, and tropical showers happen fast. A lightweight, packable rain jacket or poncho can save an entire night of music.

A Quick Note About Bags 🎒

If you’re staying on-site, you likely won’t need a bag or backpack during the day.

However, guests commuting in from other resorts may want a small daypack to avoid missing music while traveling back and forth. Keep it light and hands-free if you go this route.

If you’re on-site and bouncing back to your room easily, skip it.

Weather Forecast

December in Riviera Maya is close to perfect:

  • Daytime highs in the mid-70s to low-80s°F
  • Comfortable, breezy evenings
  • Lower humidity than summer
  • Occasional brief rain showers

Translation: pack light, breathable, and fun. Bring layers as it can get cool there in the evenings.

✨ Theme Nights, Glow Gear & Balcony Decor

Closer to the Sun is not just about the music — the themes are half the fun.

5. Glow, Under-the-Sea & Theme Night Gear

The official schedule just dropped, and the theme nights are confirmed.

  • Under the Sea-WeedSunday, January 11
  • Light It Up (Glow Night)Monday, January 12

This year includes Under the Sea and glow-heavy nights — and people go all in.

Think:

  • Glow accessories
  • Light-up wearables
  • LED accents that move with you

You don’t need a full costume — just one or two statement pieces make it fun.

🏨 Balcony Decorating Contest (Judged Jan 12 – Day 3)

Yes, it’s real — and yes, people go all out.

Balconies are judged on creativity and theme, with lots of light-up elements:

  • Flags & tapestries
  • Battery-powered string lights
  • Inflatable characters (aliens are popular this year 👽)
  • Suction hooks for easy setup

People start decorating as soon as they arrive, so bring what you need to start decorating early.

🛟 Pool Floaties

Floaties are everywhere during daytime pool sets and lazy afternoons. They’re included on the Cosmic Glow page.

If floating with friends during a set sounds like your vibe — don’t forget one.

💵 Bring Small Bills — Cash Is King

This is a big one that first-timers underestimate.

Bring lots of $1s and $5s for:

  • Bartenders
  • Housekeeping
  • Shuttle drivers
  • Resort staff

Cash goes a long way here and is always appreciated.

🎶 Final Tip: Pack Smart, Not Heavy

You don’t need everything — but the right things matter.

Between the two, you’re covered.
