Reggae Under the San Diego Skyline: KBong, Johnny Cosmic, The Movement & Tribal Seeds at the Rady Shell
There’s nothing quite like live music under the stars — and Saturday night at the Rady Shell proved just that. Nestled along San Diego’s bayfront, this venue is a work of art in itself, originally designed for the San Diego Symphony. But lately, the Shell has opened its stage to a wider world of sound, and this weekend reggae took center stage — a perfect match for San Diego’s coastal soul.
The Location: San Diego’s Rady Shell
If you’ve never been, the Rady Shell is more than a concert venue — it’s an experience. The sweeping views of downtown San Diego, the Coronado Bridge, and the bayfront create a backdrop that feels almost unreal. As the sun dipped behind the skyline and the first notes hit, the city lights seemed to pulse in time with the music.
Traditionally home to the Symphony, the Shell has quickly become a stage for all kinds of performances — from classical to pop, jazz, country, rock, and reggae. Saturday nights sound was born from community, love, and culture filling a space originally designed for orchestras. The sound is just incredible here.
The Music: Global Meets Local
The lineup brought together some of reggae’s biggest names and hometown heroes:
- KBong & Johnny Cosmic – Also part of the Stick Figure family, each have vibrant solo careers that radiate positivity. Their set featured performances off their new album: Spirit of the Light which was just released on August 29th, check it out on Amazon music.
- The Movement – The Movement brought it as well, with their signature blend of roots and modern reggae energy. Their sound felt right at home under the San Diego stars. Check out one of my favorite Movement albums: Ways of the World on Amazon Music
- Tribal Seeds – Born right here in San Diego, Tribal Seeds carries deep cultural significance. As a Latino-fronted reggae band, they’ve pushed boundaries and brought SoCal reggae onto the global stage. Watching them perform in their own backyard — at one of the city’s crown jewel venues — was powerful. Tribal Seeds released their fifth studio album, titled Ancient Blood on February 9, 2024, check it out on Amazon music.
The Vibe: Family, Love & Community
What stood out the most? The vibe. It wasn’t just a concert — it was a gathering.
- Families sprawled out on blankets.
- Old friends reconnecting, as if no time had passed.
- Smiles everywhere, with zero drama, zero negativity.
It was a reminder of why we cherish live music: connection. The same energy that fills massive festivals was alive at the Shell, but distilled into something even more intimate. Love, unity, and rhythm carried the night.
Why It Mattered
Big stages and global tours are incredible, but nights like this prove that local shows still carry the same magic — sometimes even more. Seeing bands you love, play in your own city, with your own community… that’s what it’s all about.
For Pink Bears Closet, it’s a reminder that whether we’re on the rail at a huge festival or hanging under the skyline at the Rady Shell, it’s the family vibe and healing music that keeps us coming back.
What’s Next: Mission Bayfest 2025
If Saturday night proved anything, it’s that San Diego’s reggae scene is alive and thriving. And the vibes don’t stop here — Mission Bayfest returns October 17–19, 2025, bringing some of the biggest names in reggae back to the waterfront. A BIG shout out to SD’s very own Mikey Beats for organizing this amazing event.
